I too have a problem with my right arm/hand (severe carpal tunnel) and
discovered that using a regular mouse was about the worse thing for it.  I
decided to try a Logitech Trackman Marble mouse ($59 - $79) with the "thumb
ball".  I rest my elbow on the chair arm and NEVER have to move my arm at all.
Your thumb handles most everything and there is a middle key that can be
configured as a "pop-up" menu to handle items that require extensive
manipulation of the ball such as 'File open' 'File exit (X) 'file minimize
(-).  Well it works for me and she can always try it out, keep the receipt and
return if it doesn't solve the problem!
