I bought some venison from the butcher, it is farmed venison from NZ.

It has a smell to it, I can't say that it is a "gamey" smell as I have so
little experience with game meats. The butcher claims it is free run meat
and "thinks" it is grass fed.

Anyway, could this smell be spoilage? How would I know if it is simply an
intrinsic smell of the meat itself, or spoilage?

Also what fat do I mix with it? With the first batch I used some olive oil
(knowing this will not preserve it) but simply to make a raw food for my
son. I made it last night and have not eaten it yet.

Would appreciate any comments.

It was $10.99 per pound.

This same butcher also said he can order elk meat from NZ.

Moira

should I eat it myself and see if I get sick, first??

I can hardly bring myself to eat beef pemmican, this is even less
appetizing. Please recall my son is allergic to beef, that is why we are
trying this. He adores beef pemmican but acts drunk/disroriented afterwards
sometimes.
