Mary,

You might have been referring to this in the above paragraph, but there was
a major battle some years ago in Freeport, Me. when McDonalds wanted to
replace an early 19th Cent. structure with its usual design. An ad hoc
committee fought it and eventually won.

I don't know any of the principles involved, but could probably get you a
name with a few phonecalls.
