My wide-angle position on the Preservation Trades Network (PTN) is that the
preservation trades are a resource to the general economy and that for
historic preservation to prevail it is necessary that there be a skilled
workforce capable of doing qualified work, as opposed to an unskilled
workforce doing cheap work. This resource cannot be maintained if it is not
recognized as a vital component of the historic preservation community and
protected and cultivated accordingly. The preservation trades need to be
sustained through the providing of profitable work, and the public needs to be
able to find and employ qualified trades. My intent is to work towards raising
consciousness of the preservation trades, to give the trades a voice, by
increasing their exposure in the communications media through print
publications, the internet, trade organizations, conferences, and marketing.
