I remember about 20 years ago that the MacDonald's that was built on the
Commons in Ithaca, NY caused quite a stir.  Everyone was absolutely sure it
would destroy the atmosphere.  2 years later, it won an award for fitting
so well into the atmosphere of this outdoor mall.  I believe this was all
due to the same type of commission of which you speak.  I believe that
Mickey D's is still in business because the franchise owner was willing to
work with the city on this.
