I don't think that bananas are really the great potassium source they are
touted to be. This is especially true for someone who wishes to avoid
excessive carbohydrate. When you look at the potassium you get per calorie
(or better yet, per gram of carb.), bananas look mediocre when compared to
many other plant foods. For example, 100 g of banana has 396 g of potassium
and 23.43 g carb (only 2.4 g fiber... the rest is starch and sugar). By
comparison, 100 g broccoli does nearly as well at 325 mg, but its carb
content is much lower at 5.24 g (3 g fiber). When the mg potassium per 100
calories is computed for each, you get: banana: 430 mg, broccoli: 1160 mg.
In addition, unlike bananas, broccoli is high in calcium, magnesium, vitamin
c and folate. Many other vegetables yield similar results.
