Re John Leeke's inquiry:
>Is there a way to get a report out of the National Register database that
>shows number of buildings of different types in each state?
As of 1994, there were 3,122 National Register listings and 59,438
Contributing Resources in New York State alone. Nationally, there were
45,444 Buildings, 157 Objects, 8,898 Districts, 3,232 Structures, and 4,372
sites nationally. The National Register lists Areas of Significance by
number for 38 categories, the largest being "Architecture: 47,744". Add to
this the properties considered eligible, on local listings, and therefore
afforded some level of recognition and protection, and multiply this by the
number of pages of data on each building, and we can see how big the task
would be to enter a complete database. I for one would love to be able to
call up the National Register web site, and get the significance statement
on a particular property without bugging the SHPO every time.
To obtain copies of registration documentation, query the NRIS
database...contact HRHP, Interagency Resources Division, NPS, P.O. Box
37127, Washington, DC 20013-7127, (202) 343-9559); Fax (202) 343-1836. I
read that registration documentation, grouped by state, also is avaliable
on microfiche from Chadwyck-Healey, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia, (800)
752-0515; Fax:(703) 683-7589.
HABS is working on getting some of its 25,000 buildings and structures
represented on line though, a magnificent database.
I doubt we will find the properties abstracted by "type" and other
interesting subcategories though without going thru it yourself. Any
voluntiers, or is this a grant opportunity for a grant or possibly our tax
dollars at work? --Jim Rhodes
