Interesting stuff indeed. I grew up in upstate NY, a daughter of Irish
immigrants who went the other way!  My Dad's ancestors migrated from Alpena,
Michigan (Upper Peninsula?) in the early 20th C. They were drawn by the
tanneries in western NYS, when the logging industry seemed to be dying out. My
Dad, who grew up in Gowanda NY, still remembers long ferry rides back to
Alpena to spend the summer with relatives. (I think of this especially now,
since my Dad is in the process of trying to reestablish contact with them.) I
wonder if there are any Michigander-type names in western NYS?
