We have been asked to report on the history of
vegetarianism in Boston, and we would like to
include friendly comments about the
Ann Wigmore Foundation,
the Hippocrates Health Institute (HHI),
New Hippocrates (David Kingsley and crowd),
the Boston Natural Hygiene Society
(had several incarnations, according
to Fred Chaffee of Hendersonville, NC,
formerly of the greater Boston area,
and one of its guiding lights),
a natural hygiene raw foods group
at MIT, led by biochemistry researcher
Chiu Nan-Lai, who later moved to Texas
to research and teach,
Dick Gregory of Plymouth MA,
a raw foods vegan, we are told,
Viktoras Kulvinskas, who was close
to Ann Wigmore and HHI (in the earlier days),
who moved around, we are told
(anything about Viktoras would be
interesting to us, BTW),
some of the legal hassles between
Ann Wigmore and the Massachusetts
State Attorney General's Office about
her promotion of the curative properties
of the sproutarian diet,
Sproutman (Steve Meyerowitz),
and the rest.
If ANYone has ANY information about
ANY of these individuals, institutions,
or trends and could put together something
and send it to us, we would be most grateful.
