Jim, Thanks for the info about the after effects of Peel-Away on wood
windows. This preservation bulletin board has been a benefit to me
already. Other research I have done this past week has made me
somewhat wary of chemical strippers. I have almost come to the
conclusion not to use any of them on my project. Heat may be the way
to go, because I am requiring that all the glazing be removed. With
the glass out, there would not be the danger of breakage from the
heat. These windows have been neglected so long that I want them
completely cleaned, repaired and restored so even a negligent building
manager will not be able to hurt them during his tenure. Then maybe
the next one we get will be more caring about historical buildings.
The first thing I am having done is testing to learn if the paint has
any lead content. Also to discover the historic colors. Then I can
     fine tune the specification. -Grace

In relation to the in-advisability of using "Peel Away" check out the 68th
Street and Park Ave. Armory. All the windows were stripped using Peel Away by
a lead abatement company and I did the sash restoration. All the wood that was
stripped using Peel Away has bled thru the paint leaving a white residue.
I have given up on all chemical strippers and have gone to heat and mechanical
meathods.
