Paul,

I posted something about the cooking practices of the Bushmen on
03/14/98, see

http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/CGI/wa.exe?A2=ind9803&L=raw-food&P=R13190

In my opinion, the reasons why hunter-gatherers have low cancer rates
despite eating a lot of cooked meat, include:

-fiber: since they don't eat refined grains or sugar, their get at
the same time more fiber *and* more meat than the average American.

-antioxidants (vitamins A,C,E, etc...)+some factors in plants that
protect against cancer.

 -chemical/pollution-free environment

 -exercise

 -low-stress life.

And reasons why people eating less meat have less cancer (if that's
true), include:

-vegetarians eat more... vegetables, hence fiber, etc. (of course, as
I said above, it is possible to get more fiber AND meat at the same
time).

-vegetarians are more health-conscious. They might eat less junk
food.

-vegetarian diets are often restricted in calories compared to
omnivorous ones.

 -placebo effect.
