My $.02. Paul's probably on the right track on this. Usually the
motherboard only supports one type of memory (SIMM or DIMM not both). Also
was a hard drive or CD rom recently changed or upgraded? An improperly
setup CD rom ro HD will cause this. (i.e. MASTER/SLAve settings incorrect
one or the other).

The memory is of unknown type, other than 16 meg is in the form
of 72 pin SIMMs and one 16mb stick of 66 mhz DIMM.

If the manual is available, have you looked up the memory
configuration re: the motherboard's ability to utilize SIMMs and
DIMMs together? Few motherboards I have looked into permit this,
mostly, I suspect, because SDRAM DIMMs tend to be faster than
SIMMs.
