Yes, it does Auto Drive Detect. From the original post:

I'm afraid so. I get the controller error with nothing attached to the
Motherboard. Hook up the ribbon cable, boot with the floppy, and there
is the hard drive.

I'm guessing some small "routine" in the booting part of the controller, fails
a test at boot up. But the rest of the controller works fine.
