One enemy of computers (or most anything electronic) is heat, and I don't think
that CDROM drives are any exception to this.

The faster drives tend to run hotter because of the work they need to do to
change speeds of the disk.

I noticed this on my system and became concerned when ejecting a CD after a
while of heavy use and the disk itself was quite warm. I since added an extra
case cooling fan and things stay much cooler. Reliability of the system in
general has increased.

If the disk is very warm right after you eject it, then heat could be causing a
problem, try adding extra cooling. Couldn't hurt.
