David,

You do not need any expensive hardware to setup these two machines.

Just goto 'Control Panel' -> 'Network' and make sure that the following are
installed in the 'Configuration' settings:
    Client for Microsoft Networks
    NE2000 compatible ( or whatever his ethernet card is )
    NetBeui -> NE2000 compatible ( or whatever his ethernet card is )

You may also have:
    Dialup Adapter
    TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter

Also make sure the Workgroups are the same on both machines in the
'Identity' tab.

Then you have to map your network drives, or 'share' the different
files/folders on the systems.

Once you do that, reboot both machines and they should 'see' each other.

This is just a general overview of what you need to do.
