Do you suppose at least one of those nuts who are screaming loudly to
irradiate food will propose nuclear zapping of the whole cow and thereby
save money on pasteurization?

And, in case anyone is remotely interested, at a flea market I saw an old
"David Bradley" (a pre 1950's Sears brand) *home pasteurization unit*. The
construction was confusing: a removable 2 gallon milk container sat in a
base that had an iron core. There was a lid that had a second iron core.
Both lid and base (but not container) had a wire running to a transformer.

What heated the milk? I don't know and hope someone will e-mail me an
explanation. Could there have been an induction field set up between the
top and bottom iron cores? It was clearly not a simplistic heating
arrangement---which I assume would have managed to scorch the milk.
