I "blew through" a problem sort of like this myself...
Either the Acer Site --- http://www.acerperipherals.com/
or the Adaptec Site --- http://adaptec.com
says the aspi layer MUST be fully operational,
AND fully up to date. Adaptec has a test file (aspichk.exe) and even
a repair utility -- but to do the repair you must have one of their
SCSI cards. (I don't.) The alternative is a reinstall of Win9X,
or beat it back in and get lucky.
I lost my secondary controller through stupidity, but managed to
get it back PROPERLY through a stroke of good fortune with ASPI
intact. There is a ton of good troubleshooting info on both Sites.
I saved 24 files (20.4Megs - Patches and FAQ.htm s) over a period of
six days. For some versions of Win95, they also recommend the system
patches that are "quite old" by now. PS: My Acer CD-RW works great!!!
Good luck, and happy digging...
Rick
