If the hard drive parameters are not available, you can use
software, such as IDEID.EXE from Micro House to identify the
drive and its parameters. This software will read the firmware
on the drive itself for purposes of identifying the hard drive make,
model and drive parameters. I recommended you keep an
utility such as IDEID.EXE on your BOOT FLOPPY for diagnostic
purposes.
You can get IDEID.ZIP from the MicroHouse Website at:
http://www.solutions.microhouse.com/support/files/misc.htm
or from their FTP site at:
ftp://ftp.microhouse.com/MHUTILS/
Also, Seagate has a similar utility, Find-ATA, at:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discfile.shtml
The software issues a command to any properly connected drive
and retrieves the firmware information, even if there are no HDD
parameters in CMOS, or incorrect geometry.
NOSPIN also has an article on IDE Hard Drives, which I wrote,
starting at:
http://www.nospin.com/pc/hd/index.htm
and it contains detailed installation notes and links.
