     When I had similar problems, (lots of times), I went out to
KMART and gotten a couple of $5 serial mice.  You might be wise
to test your mouse somewhere else, and make a trip to KMART...
PS: I have had DELL and Microsoft ship me NEW mice (~$65) that
were either defective, or failed in less than thirty days.
 (MS ver2 mice, all under warranty)  I'm using the NEW good ones,
but the cheap ones are still in "back-up".
