Aren't zip drives the cat's meow? In the hierarchy of drive letter
assignments, zip drives rate above CD-ROM drives. This means that the
zip took over your CD-ROM's drive letter (E). I think(!) that the
CD-ROM drive would get the next drive letter, F. If drivers for it are
loaded through config.sys and autoexec.bat, you've got to change the
switch (I believe it's /L:) that tells the computer what drive letter
your CD-ROM is assigned (change /L:E to /L:F).

In Windows Device manager, properties of the CD-ROM, I always set the
drive letter assignment to way above the "next" drive (like "R") so as
to never have a problem like this.

I just finished installing a Zip drive which was given F: drive.  Only
problem is that my cd-rom which was on E: has vanished along with E:\.
I'd appreciate any help I can get.
