I'm actually from the US, but I have lived in Norway for four years.
Before I moved to Norway, I lived in Australia for seven years. I
think the news reporting in both Norway and Australia is different
from the news reporting in the US. I think the main difference is
that the news reporting in Australia and in Norway concentrates more
on reporting just the facts. I don't know that the facts reported are
of better quality, but I think there is much less emphasis on how the
people feel about a story than there is on the facts of the story.
There is much less emphasis on the personalities involved and there is
much less emphasis on building up a conflict (whatever its context) as
if it were the superbowl of conflicts. But I don't have any data to
support this. It is just my belief after having lived in all three
places and comparing the different reporting styles. Here in Norway,
I get my news from the Norwegian TV networks and from the BBC World
Service. I would say the BBC World Service is the best news reporting
available. The Norwegian news reporting is also very good, but I
don't understand Norwegian well enough to accurately compare it with
the quality of the BBC.
