The Capitol is extraordinary. A must see on everyone's travel itinerary. 1832-40 to replace the previous which burned. Nearly bankrupted the state, but wouldn't you know it, those Scots were at it again, and the stonework of this Greek Revival magnificence was certain not to burn. Ithiel Town and Alexander Jackson Davis from New York were the primary architects, while David Paton of Scotland was on site as supervising architect, and his contributions were substantial.
The integrity of this National Historic Landmark is more than a little remarkable, and it is presently undergoing its most recent restoration according to the most current preservation state-of-the-art.
Also on Capitol Square is the NHL Christ Episcopal Church, 1854, by Richard Upjohn, deliberately retained by the diocese to make an impression and to lift the state of ecclesiastical architectural affairs to a higher plane.
