Dear Todd,

Thanks for writing. But I have some questions:

>I understand your predicament. I don't think the rice will do
>any harm, especially if it is balanced by protein.

But, doesn't the rice (disaccharide) nourish undesirable yeast and bacteria,
whose waste and toxins then circulate up to the brain? In other words, from
all the reading I have done, schizophrenia and many cases of autism, are
caused by intestinal dysbiosis.(caused by incomplete digestion of
disaccharides such as grains, sucrose, etc)

And, from all my reading, a paleo diet which excludes grains and
disaccharides starves out undesirable microbes, by not providing them with food.

See BREAKING THE VICIOUS CYCLE, INTESTINAL HEALTH THROUGH DIET, by Elaine
Gottschall, and in particular, read chapter 7, "The Brain Connection" which
discusses how the brain is affected by the bowel.

The author cured her daughter of schizophrenia through diet.

My question I guess is, I believe in the paleo diet, but at what cost? Do
you lose your health and sanity over trying to force a 5 year old child to
eat salmon and vegetables in the morning, when he knows his brother and
sister are having toast and jelly and bacon? Do you wash three loads of
dishes every day? [Does anyone realize how much processed food saves on
labor, and how accustomed some of us were to these foods, esp us working moms?]

Do you slave over your pemmican for hours? Do you slice your frozen venison
by hand? (only to have the jerky turn out terrible, all for naught)?

Do you become a recluse, unable to leave your home (my son has reacted to
beef and is off pemmican right now)? Do you not celebrate thankgiving or
other holidays with your family(they think your diet is absolutely crazy,
"of course wheat is good for a child") Most Americans on the SAD think paleo
is absolutely nuts. And, speaking of nuts trail mix is out of the quesiton
as nuts he can't digest, nut butters, yes, in small amounts.

To get my child to eat paleo, I sit with him at every meal and have him take
one bite vegetables, one bite meat. Unfortunately, this child, unlike Gray
Hawk, was a carbo addict like all the rest of us, up to quite recently.

The g/f diet helped but I have seen further gains in socialization with
paleo, more interest in friends which was not there before. However, the
bowel problems are still there! I think he may have been one of those
unfortunates mentioned in Wakefields' work in the LANCET which talks about
kids' bowels nuked by the MMR. Most of these kids will never recover. They
were completely normal until the MMR.

But I think one of his main problems was being on antibiotics for so long, I
have read on other lists how much "brain" there is in the bowel, how much
immune system there is in the bowel, how crucial the bowel is, and if you
give it so much antibiotics, will it ever recover, I don't know. If I only
knew then, what I know now. What a trusting fool and dupe of the docs, I was.

>My autistic son has made gains comparable to your son's, and I
>attribute much of that to his gluten-free diet.

What is his level of functioning, precisely?

One other concern I have about the g/f is just this, when I gave him the
rice bread and cashew butter, he was like a little carb addict, would
promptly eat nothing else, I felt it was refined food all over again, felt
really guilty. In other words, he loves it too much, like an addict eating
chocolate cake, it just was not healthy. It seems the foods he resists most,
are the best for him. Like chicken soup is so digestible and healthy, he
resists it.

*IF* I could somehow keep him on totally healthy food, strict paleo, I feel
he would almost totally recover. But do I lose my own life and sanity over
it? Try living in a house with 4 other carbo addicts. And, my two older kids
have a much, much better diet than their peers, which is amazingly high in
refined sugar, many parents don't even send a sandwich any more!!!! just
processed snack/sugar foods which their little tyrants have demanded.

What is is, with this culture?

>Plus, I still wonder about the blood type connection, since
>autistic people are so heavily represented in the A group. I
>noted with interest that Loren Cordain mentioned the influence of
>lectins on the immune system. According to D'Adamo, rice
>contains no lectins that offend the immune systems of type A
>people.

What are lectins?

Dr Paul Shattock in the UK said that the most important thing is gf and cf,
which is a diet that is a cakewalk for a child, compared to paleo. But
something deep inside tells me, that paleo is better.
