INDIA HINDU GROUP TO BLOCK CHRISTIAN CONVERSIONS
NEW DELHI (CWN) - A powerful Hindu group said on Wednesday that it will use
its resources to stop the conversion to Christianity of native groups in
northeastern India.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (National Volunteers Organization) said it
will use social welfare programs to stop people from reaching out to
Christians, and especially the Catholic Church, for help. "The northeastern
states of our country have turned into a fertile ground for anti-national
activities," Satyanarayan Bansal, head of the Delhi unit of the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said. "Aided and abetted by powers inimical to our
interest and flush with foreign funds, the Church and her agents are
employing unscrupulous means to carry on their nefarious activities
including the conversion of the poor and illiterate tribals through
deceit," he said in a statement.
The RSS advocates that India change from an officially secular nation that
treats all religions as equal to become officially Hindu. Christians make
up just 2.3 percent of the population of 930 million. Christian
missionaries have been actively involved in religious and social work in
the northeast region that has dozens of guerilla groups seeking ethnic
rights or independent homelands. That missionary work has irritated Hindu
activists who say the missionaries' aim is to achieve mass conversions to
Christianity.
