the latest issue of "Tropical Fruit News", 32(6), June 1998, has a short
article on a new bait that tricks medflies (Mediterranean fruit flies,
a major pest worldwide of fruit) into eating a read dye that kills the
fly after it (the fly) is exposed to light. The bait does not
attract (or kill) other, beneficial insects, and has been highly
effective in tests, killing up to 100% of the flies. The bait may
be an alternative to malathion, a poisonous pesticide now in use
in Medfly control programs.
"Tropical Fruit News" is published by the Rare Fruit Council International,
Miami, Florida.
