I once got a raise after the boss found me sleeping. Of course I had to get
yelled at first, awakened and have a chair kicked out from under my legs.
When he stopped yelling long enough for my foreman to interceed he learned
that I had worked a double shift because the boss said that the job I was
working on had to be ready at 7:00 am no matter what, with no mistakes. Not
trusting the guys on third shift to complete the work to those standards, and
knowing that I had been charged with its completion, I had stayed. Since I
had put in a full day in lectures and studio that day...and probably a full
shift with some overtime the night before...I didn't feel safe to drive home.

This really was my only experience in the private sector. I am now amazed to
think how fast reward and punishment can be dished out. When I did something
good, the raise was in next check. When I screwed up...I fixed it.
