Try the Citris Strip products available at your local hardware or paint
store.  It works without raising the grain on wood, or causing the
bleed-thru when painted.  I am more afraid of heat and potential of
fires, than I am of chemical residue.  The key is to test a small area
before proceeding with the entire job.  Good Luck!
