Mushrooms are a special case. Perhaps there are too many different kinds of
mushrooms, and they only constitute a small part of the diet. In additions,
humans and animals have other strategies to protect themselves from poisoning
(like experience of others).

I however think that smell and taste are generally good indicators of the
"usefulness" of a food. But perhaps you won't believe me until you have the
experience of "taste changes" and such.
