NHers and others scream about genetic tampering partly because of
the type of tampering, partly (as some scream here about detox or
instinct or the joys of parasites) from ideology unsullied by objectivity.
One success of recombinant DNA work is development of crops that
can live with much higher levels of currently legal pesticides.
Hope has been held out that superior mixes of amino acids can be
designed in, or more varied or popular fatty acids, or more or better
vitamins, without unforeseen negative consequences.
So far, though, the attempt to design 'new' crops-- the potamato,
for example-- has resulted in weak monsters.
