They are mistaken. Plenty of free range beef on the big island of Hawaii.
They can't give it away--people prefer to buy "imported" mainland grain-fed
beef. Frustrating to the local ranchers--good for me, who pays $3.49/lb for
New York strip with plenty of surface fat. (I have heard that certain big
island cattle are shipped to Canada, fattened on grains, shipped back to
Hawaii and sold as Angus beef. That's right up there with feeding sardine
fish meal to chickens, eh?
BTW, the secret to enjoying pastured meat is to age it. A month or more in
the cooler or a week at room temperature and it is tender tender tender
tender.
Also, FWIW, I lived in New Zealand for a time and, while the lamb and
cattle were pastured, it was more difficult to find "drug-free" lamb and
cattle there than it is in the USA.
