Tom:
An interesting question - perhaps some vegan list members will comment.
Is it better to die of old age, or predation, when one is an animal?
I recall hearing of a study some time ago, that said that about 50% of
the animals killed by lions were healthy, the other 50% were weak/sick.

Fertile eggs represent a living, but unborn animal, hence would be
effectively a type of meat. Infertile eggs - the standard in most markets -
are the 'womb fluids' of a chicken. Here some veggies disagree; some say
infertile eggs are OK, others say not. (An infertile egg will not hatch,
hence does not represent a living animal.) One argument against them is that
in nature, most eggs are fertile, hence infertile eggs are "less natural".
I generally avoid eggs, myself, but others have different choices, of course.

Thanks for your interesting post!

Tom Billings
