aloha!
all,
i celebrated winter solstice 1996 by eating raw meat.
after fasting my cat for a few days, i bought her some flesh at the
nearby "new leaf community market" (10% profits donated locally, etc.).
when i mentioned that the 1/8 lb of ahi tuna would go to my cat, the
hippie-butcher exclaimed, "your cat eats better than i do!" then he
added, "most people get ground turkey for their kitties." so i bought a
quarter pound of the dead organic poultry. strange, standing at the meat
counter, almost nine at night. "here's a little treat for the kitty!" i
hear, looking up and grabbing a small white paper-wrapped package with
the word *free* scribbled across it. with my three little packets of
flesh, i shuffled towards the registers. happy hen free-range eggs (for
15 cents each) caught my eye in the cooler. i got one for my furry
friend. i'd eaten brown eggs at tierra true's homestead, and this one
from the store looked so white. ovo-rawists, do you have a preference?
arriving home, i fed max (the cat) ahi tuna (delivered that day). it
smelled fishy to me. ground turkey didn't attract me in the slightest
(the opposite, really). opening the mystery package from new leaf's
hippie butcher, i find a thick slice of cold turkey. and it smells
*good*. i offer it to max and she gives up the ahi to tear at the
turkey. after watching in fascination for a while, i saved the last bit
from my carnivorous companion's jaws (it still smelled *good*). max
returned to scarfing down the red tuna. oh yeah, tuna cost over
$16/pound, while the ground turkey weighed in at just over $2/pound.
i've heard from tierra that you can obtain the former at the latter's
price from trader joe's (how? they freeze the feeesh!)
similar to when i lost my virginity, i knew i wanted to do it, but i
decided to wait until after midnight. why? as a freshman in high
school, i lost my virginity at the beginning of st. patrick's day (no
more than 23 seconds into the day, in fact!). as a sophomore in college
(now), i lost my vegetarianism at the beginning of winter solstice,
december 21. cold turkey.
lying in bed, naked, all the lights off, listening to the sound of rain
on the roof. a vegan girlfriend holds the odiferous turkey between her
teeth and kisses me just after midnight. i kiss back & bite & chew.
mmm-mm-mmm! what flavor & texture! i laugh out loud as we both marvel
at the novelty of the moment. surreal. vegans no more! well, i'd
already taken the plunge nine days before with two infertile eggs. but
now i'd really gone off the deep end!
i had exposed my vegan accomplice to the writings of zephyr, veg-raw, the
nhm2m, & health & beyond. she asked me not to tell anyone, and i agreed
not to use her name when i went public with my tale. i'll mention
also that the brief n' tasty snack ended in a mutually pleasurable
fashion. -{( outercourse )}-
the next morning i picked & juiced six lemons, added water & stevia, and
shared with my formerly-vegan girlfriend. as she drank, her eyes widened
to see me stick out my tongue, bend at the waist, and lick up an ant. i
ate a total of three black ants right off the counter. hot, hot, hot!
for not killing the turkey myself, i felt a need to eat an animal that i
harvested directly. karmic scale: three whole ant beings vs. a fraction
of one turkey being.
my cat has now had mahi-mahi and shark meat. i've had neither, although
i did try some of the ahi tuna after it sat in my low-temperature
dehydrator for half a day. crusty=tasty! tasty=crusty! i smelled some
turkey breast i picked up along with the mahi-mahi & shark at a different
"new leaf community markey" (the #1 community market/health food store,
(in my opinion) "the food bin", has only survived the new leaf invasion
by keeping their doors open to midnight. many, many, late night health
food shoppers!), but the more jelly-like white turkey breast didn't
compel me to devour it. my cat grows fat.
the day after i ate three infertile, organic egg yolks from tierra true's
chickens. we buried pvc pipe in the ground, bending each tube into a
semi-circle by placing the ends into holes we'd previously dug. i weeded
and entertained tierra's daughter (when she didn't entertain herself),
while tierra picked edible flowers (for sale).
today i ate organic, rennetless, raw cheese. quite a bit, in fact. i
consider dairy the least "natural" of the animal products, as no other
animal drinks milk of another species, or any milk after weaning. tierra
mentioned the cheese having predigested some of the lactose, and i
thought of all the long-lived peoples around the world who used cultured
dairy products. semi-hard & hard cheeses ain't yogurt & kefir, but i
have suffered no ill-effects thus far. in fact, i found it quite
satisfying with a tossed salad. at this writing, 9:23pm, my nostrils
remain unclogged, my throat clear, and my odor bearable. ;-p
today, tierra & i tied hemp twine to the pvc arches we'd put up
yesterday, ending up with three lines traversing the length of the flower
beds. unrolling a new roll of smelly plastic, we pulled the whole 100'
of it over the white arches, and... voila! instant greenhouse! digging
dirt onto the sides added the finishing touch. weeding inside the
half-cylinder, the temperature rose rapidly. soon, if i touched the
plastic, the condensation would dampen me considerably. wet, wet, wet!
wet condensation didn't really compare to the wet rain we had yesterday.
tierra's metal roof gives a great performance every time the rain whips
up into a frenzy. play some bob dylan & curl up under the cover with
m2m's & h&b's. ah, what decadence! luck & luxury! how could one count
so many blessings?
omniraw,
bodhi
