This e-mail is a reminder of the various Listserv commands available to
you.
Please set your CHOMSKY subscription to NOMAIL if you are going to be away
for a few days and don't want to return to 500 pieces of mail.
If you have an "Auto Replies" feature in your e-mail program.
Please set your CHOMSKY subscription to "NOMAIL" if you plan on invoking
your auto reply feature. Letting people know that you are "out of the
office" or will not be responding to e-mail messages is great. However,
when every message sent to you sends your "auto reply" message back to the
list, that creates a problem.
Suggestion:

Before you invoke your e-mail "auto reply," set all your mailing list
subscriptions to "NOMAIL." This way you will receive all the proper
confirmations/replies before the auto reply starts.
Auto restart:
-------------
Send me a message specifying the date you want your mail to AUTO restart.
On that day you will automatically start receiving mail from the CHOMSKY.
If you use the AUTO start method, be sure you have removed your "auto
reply" by that date.

The easiest way to change your subscription options is from the
CHOMSKY Archives Web site.

This Web page allows you to join, leave or make adjustments to your
CHOMSKY subscription options.
To prevent third parties from tampering with your subscription, an e-mail
message with a confirmation code may be sent to the address you specify to
confirm your identity. Simply wait for this message to arrive, then follow
the instructions to confirm the operation.
All of the following commands *must* be sent to the LISTSERV address.
The LISTSERV address is:
[log in to unmask]
You may leave the list at anytime by sending a:
UNSUBSCRIBE CHOMSKY
or
SIGNOFF CHOMSKY
in the body of the message.
Example:
TO: [log in to unmask]
SUBJECT:

UNSUBSCRIBE CHOMSKY
You *must* UNSUBSCRIBE from the same address you subscribed with.
No Mail:
-------
To TEMPORARILY stop incoming mail for CHOMSKY you should issue the NOMAIL
command.
NOMAIL will TEMPORARILY STOP your CHOMSKY mail until YOU start it
again. The command syntax is:
SET CHOMSKY NOMAIL
Example:
TO: [log in to unmask]
SUBJECT:

SET CHOMSKY NOMAIL
Use the NOMAIL command if you are going to be away for a few days and do
not want to come back to 500 pieces of CHOMSKY mail. This is a great
command because you can still send information/postings to the list
although you will not receive any posts. NOMAIL your mail as often as you
like.
When you are ready to start receiving CHOMSKY mail again, issue the
following command:
SET CHOMSKY MAIL
This command will start your mail again.
Example:

SET CHOMSKY MAIL
A daily DIGEST is available by issuing the following command:
SET CHOMSKY DIGEST
You will receive all the individual postings in one e-mail message.
You can then simply scan the table of contents and decide if there is
anything there of interest to you. If there is, you can check it out. If
not . . . delete the digest. You are informed and you have one less
e-mail message

Never send files or attachments to a discussion list, especially CHOMSKY.
--------------------------------
Files and attachments should only be sent to people you have made prior
arrangements with to send and/or receive files/attachments. Even then,
you should only save those files/attachments to a floppy disk or a zip
disk designated explicitly for downloads and files/attachments.
Use antiviral scanning software on the floppy disk or zip disk BEFORE
opening the file.
Even your best on-line friends can infect your system.
Only send e-mail in standard ASCII and not use HTML code embedding.
If you want your posting read by the broadest number of people, please
refrain from sending ANY e-mail to the CHOMSKY list using HTML code
embedding. The MAJORITY of people using e-mail simply can not read HTML
code embedding.
If your mail program supports fancy formatting (bold, italic and so on) in
the mail messages it generates, DO NOT use those feature on the CHOMSKY
list.
In general, any time you send a fancy formatted message, make sure that
the recipient(s) has a mail program that can display such messages. At
this time, most Internet mail programs, especially the international
programs, do not support anything other than PLAIN TEXT in messages,
although this will change over time (three (3) years).
When one configures their browser (or e-mail client) to send HTML code,
the message is no longer conforming to the standard/international e-mail
protocols. This immediately reduces the number of places that will accept
your message (e.g. gateways, Newsgroups and BBS) and people who will read
and reply to their message.
Most people (especially me) will usually delete it before attempting to
wade through the visible codes.
E-mail is a TEXT based medium/format.
HTML formatted messages takes up unnecessary archive disk space and in
most all cases can not be read by FTP, Gopher and Lynx readers.
We are communicating on an international basis, please set your browser to
plain ASCII. This can be found under the options menu in both Netscape
and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
Avoid the viruses and worms by not sending files, attachments and HTML to
our list.
To get a listing of available commands and topics, send a request like
"help me" (without the quotation marks).

retrieved from their FTP server in a variety of word processing formats.
