There are several lists of plant based foods that are rich in calcium in a
book called, The Vegetarian Way, by Virginia and Mark Messina. This is a
wonderful book anyway, but there is no need for dairy for your calcium
requirements! There is also discussion of protein sources, and as someone
else already mentioned, most North Americans consume too much animal
protein anyway. Excess animal protein washes calcium out of your bones,
through the kidneys, so you don't want to have too much of it if you are
already having a problem with getting enough calcium.

I also would like to comment that there is no need to "combine" foods for
complete protein. This idea came from a book published years ago, called
"Diet for a small planet," and the author has since reconsidered and
published a correction that she was wrong about this! If you eat a
balanced diet throughout the day or week, you will get what you need of
protein.

I am grateful for this list. I have a son whom I suspect has IBS,
aggravated by lactose intolerance (which I have suspected for quite some
time) and wheat sensitivity. It is great to share with others and read
your experiences and successes!
