1. The Listowners are pleased to announce that the membership of the
CELIAC List has reached the 1900 mark, with subscribers from 35
countries.

2. Celiac WWW page:

The Listowners are pleased to announce the addition of a second WEB site
for Celiac reference files:

        http://rdz.stjohns.edu/library/medic/celiac/index.html

This site will be a sub set of Celiac List files (i.e. it does not have
as many files as Ted Hodge's site (see below). However, the files are
in HTML format. They are designed for easy viewing with a WWW browser
and give an initial understanding of the Celiac lifestyle and the GF
diet. In coming months the ability to perform logfile searches at this
site will be added.

The full archive site of all our reference files is mirrored on a web
page which is maintained by Ted Hodge:

        http://www.fastlane.net/homepages/thodge/archive.htm

It will continue to provide access to all files except the logfiles.

3. St Johns Upgrade:

Now that the dust has settled from the changes in software and hardware
at St Johns, here are a few points.

A. The Celiac address for posting is:

       [log in to unmask]

B. The address for all administrative commands is:

        [log in to unmask]

C. The format for a logfile search is now much simpler. This is
documented in the DBSEARCH reference file. To obtain this file,
send the following command to the address listed in item B. above:

        GET CELIAC DBSEARCH CELIAC
        // EOJ

D. Automatic Distribution of Files (AFD)

For those that receive the E-Digest and updates to various files by
automatic distribution, changes are in progress. This capability is
eventually going to be eliminated. We are in the process of working out
another method of automatically distributing files. Complete details
will be available when the plans are in place.

E. E-Digest

Subscribers to the E-Digest should send this command:

        AFD DELETE * * CELIAC

to the old Listserve address ([log in to unmask]) when they
desire to stop receiving a copy of the E-Digest. This is not required
for subscribers desiring to continue receiving the E-Digest for the next
few months.

5. Posts from this List are available from various sources:

A. As a subscriber to the Celiac List

B. Through USENET: bit.listerv.celiac

C. WEB sites with Celiac messages:

(1) Reference.COM started archiving posts for this List as of: Jan. 3,
1997. The exact URL for the archives is:

   [log in to unmask]

(2) InfoSeek.Com has posts from this List. The exact URL for the
archives is:

6. Changing of e-mail address:

Subscribers often change their e-mail address for various reasons: a
new ISP, using a name instead of a number, or because the ISP itself
makes changes that affect the e-mail address. There is no problem with
this concept, if you remember to adjust your subscription. This is done
by signing off with the old address and signing back on with the new
address. Failure to unsubscribe with your old address before you
make the change to a new e-mail address means that your mail stops, I
get errors from your system, and the benefit of access to this List is
lost. As a last resort, I can make the change for you. Just send a
message to <[log in to unmask]> identifying your old and new e-mail
addresses, and whether or not you were get you messages in digest
format (i.e., only once or twice a day).

7. Large files:

Some systems cannot handle large files. If you experience trouble
receiving a file, you can break it into parts with the split=nn command,
with "nn" indicating the maximum size for each part in kilobytes. (A
kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, less than half a printed page.) For example,
JUNO users have a limit of about 60 kilobytes per message. A JUNO user
would send this command to get the November 1994 log file in parts no
bigger than 50 kilobytes:

     GET CELIAC LOG9411 CELIAC split=50

The split= value can be between 20 and 500

8. List history files

Posts like this from the Listonwers, with recommendations for
techniques to find valuable files, improve List operations, and other
helpful tips are available in reference files. They are available in
annual files called HISTXX. Where "XX" is the year. For example to
obtain the messages for 1997, your would send to the Listserve:

GET CELIAC HIST97 CELIAC
// EOJ

9. Annual Renewal

In the next few weeks, you may receive a message from the Listserve
asking you to renew your subscription. This is a software change to
control bounced messages. When you receive the message, an explamation
is given of how to reply, but basically all that you need to do is reply
with CONFIRM Celiac.

10. Replying to the List and the poster

A fair number of subscribers have their mail programs configured
(reply to all). This results in a message going to the poster and a
copy being sent to the List. This results in two problems:

The poster get two copies. One from you and one from the List.
A majority of these copies sent to the List become errors.

On the Celiac List, we expect posters to think about the value of a post
and its ability to contribute to the poster or a majority of the other
1900 subscribers. Messages sent to the poster should be summarized back
to the List when they contribute to the discussion of the List's
objectives.

11. Listserve commands

Why certain things happen to your Celiac subscription is a common
question to the Listonwers. A handy reference for general List
operations from a subscriber standpoint is available at this WWW site:
