An article appeared in the spring 1996 publication of _Lifeline_ from the
Celiac Sprue Association United States of America, Inc., titled "Definitions
Associated With Celiac Disease". The article was developed by Leon H.
Rottmann, the Editor and Publications Board Chairman. Sources were excerpts
from writings of Seamus O'Mahony and Ann Ferguson on "Gluten-Sensitive
Enteropathy (Celiac Disease)" and from the Doctor of Medicine Thesis by
Willem Karel Dicke, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. This article is
a must read for all celiac patients. Some of what It stated:
Celiac disease and related disorders:
Definite Associations: diabetes mellitus; thyrotoxicosis;
hypothyroidism; encephalopathy; sarcoidosis; vasculitis; dermatitis
herpetiformis; encephalopathy and cerebellar atrophy; myasthenia; peripheral
neuropathy; malignant lymphomas; small-intestinal adenocarcinomas; esophageal
and pharyngeal squamous carcinoma.
Probable Associations: Addison's disease; rheumatoid arthritis;
Sjogren's syndrome; bird fancier's lung; farmer's lung; pernicious anemia;
exocrine pancreatic insufficiency; inflammatory bowel disease; primary
biliary cirrhosis; collagenous colitis.
