VITAMIN B-12 AND RAW FOOD VEGANS: ARTICLE POINTER

The material below was posted to the veg-raw e-mail list in Spring of 1996.
Raw food vegans should be aware of relevant research on vitamin B-12.

The March 1996 issue of "Vegetarian Times" magazine has an interesting, short
news article on vitamin B12 and raw/living food vegans (pg. 22). The article
cites a study published in the October issue of "Human and Clinical Nutrition"
(note: incorrect citation, correct citation below), and quotes Michael Klaper,
M.D. who recommends that live food vegans take B12 supplements. The article
also says that sea vegetables, which some live fooders rely on for B12,
"contain unhealthfully high levels of iodine".

Note: the reference to a journal titled, "Human and Clinical Nutrition",
is incorrect; the correct reference is:

"Journal of Nutrition", October 1995, vol. 125, #10, pgs. 2511-2515
(subsection is titled Human and Clinical Nutrition, which explains the "Veg
Times" mistake):

Vitamin B12 Status of Long-Term Adherents of a Strict Uncooked Vegan Diet
("Living Food Diet") is Compromised

by Anna-Liisa Rauma, Riitta Torronen, Osmo Hanninen, and Hannu Mykkanen
(Dept. of Clinical Nutrition and Physiology, University of Kuopio,
Kuopio, Finland).

It's an interesting paper, worth reading. A copy of the paper is available in
the SF-LiFE library.
