My daughter was sensitive to my consumption of cow's milk and all other
dairy products until she was three months old (the classic age when colic
tends to disappear). I nursed her until she was 15 months old, by which
time she was drinking cow's milk and eating dairy products on her own
with no apparent side effects. Unlike some of the others who've written
in, I WAS on a strict gluten free diet while nursing--but I had only
begun the strict gf diet about a year before my daughter was born. If it
takes a full two years on a strict gf diet for the intestine to heal,
then my guess is that my gut was still more permeable to food proteins
than is usual for most people.
Going dairy-free for three months was the best thing I ever did, since
Cynthia went from a screaming monster to a perfect angel (no, I really am
NOT exaggerating!) within about 12 hours. I second the opinion that
others have already raised: if you have a fussy baby, do try it without
dairy for a while to see if it makes a difference. I should think that
celiac moms would have a greater tendency to have colicky babies,
especially before diagnosis (and gf diet). This applies to nursing moms
only, of course. Does anyone have any data (anecdotal or otherwise) on
this?
