Harry,
In Windows 10, when you plug a device into the computer, you get a
dialog that says something like, "You just plugged a device into the
audio jack." It lists possible devices. The speaker or headset you
plugged in is usually the item with focus. You need to press enter on
your device.
Most of the time, I hear Jaws coming out of the speakers on the computer
until I press enter on the correct item in the dialog. Sometimes,
though, I appear to lose speech until I press enter. Again, focus is
usually, not always, in the right place.
I wonder if that's what's going on.
