If you have a newer version of MS Word, you can just open your PDFs with
that. I know this works in Word 2016 and 2019. I think it also works in
Word 2013 though I'm not sure. Just launch Word and open the PDF as if
it were a Word document. Before the file loads, you get a dialog that
says results may not be perfect or something to that effect. Press enter
on OK, and let the file finish loading.
Obviously, as with any PDF, results depend on how the file was prepared.
As we all know, some PDFs are all or mostly all images and graphics,
even of text, so our screen readers can't really deal with them. Other
PDFs are prepared in nonstandard ways, so again, partial or complete
screen reader incompatibility ensues. In both of these types of cases,
Word also has trouble and produces inferior results.
