1806 - Benjamin Banneker joins the ancestors at the age of 74 
	in Ellicott Mills, Maryland. Banneker was a self-
	taught mathematician and builder (at age 21) of the 
	first striking clock built in the United States. An 
	amateur astronomer, Banneker's calculations for solar
	and lunar eclipses appeared in 29 editions of his 
	almanacs, published from 1792 to 1797. 

1915 - Attorney James L. Curtis is named minister to Liberia.

1926 - Crisis magazine, led by editor W.E.B. DuBois, awards its
	first prizes in literature and art. Among the winners 
	will be Arna Bontemps' poem "Nocturne at Bethesda," 
	Countee Cullen's poem "Thoughts in a Zoo," Aaron 
	Douglas' painting "African Chief" and a portrait by 
	Hale Woodruff. 

1940 - The Committee on the Participation of Negroes in the 
	National Defense Program met with President Roosevelt.

1940 - The National Newspaper Publishers Association is 
	founded. 

1940 - The Spingarn Medal is presented to Dr. Louis T. Wright 
	for his civil rights leadership and his contributions 
	as a surgeon.

1940 - Benjamin Oliver Davis, Sr. is promoted to Brigadier 
	General, the first African American to attain that rank
	in the United States Army or any other branch of the 
	Armed Forces.

1955 - Robin Eubanks is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After 
	graduating cum laude from the University of the Arts, he 
	will move to New York City. He will first appear on the jazz 
	scene in the early 1980s. He will play with Slide Hampton, 
	Sun Ra, and Stevie Wonder. He will also be the musical 
	director with the jazz drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz 
	Messengers. He will also be a member of jazz drummer Elvin 
	Jones Jazz Machine. He will also be a contributor on fellow 
	jazz trombonist Steve Turre's 2003 release One4J: Paying 
	Homage to J.J. Johnson. He will also release several albums 
	as a bandleader. He will play for 15 years in double bassist 
	Dave Holland's quintet, sextet, octet and big band. J.J. 
	Johnson will recommend him for the position at the Oberlin 
	Conservatory in Ohio, where he will teach for 20 years as a 
	tenured professor of Jazz Trombone and Jazz Composition. He 
	will also teach at New England Conservatory and Berklee 
	College of Music in Boston. He will be a member in the all-
	star group the SFJAZZ Collective for 10 years 2008-2019. He
	will be one of the pioneers of M-Base. He will appear on 
	numerous television shows and specials, including The Tonight 
	Show, Saturday Night Live and The Grammys. He will also 
	pioneer the use of electronic effects with the trombone. He 
	will be a frequent lecturer, guest soloist and clinician at 
	various colleges and universities in the U.S. and around the 
	world. He will be voted #1 Trombonist by Down Beat magazine 
	and Jazz Times. He is the brother of guitarist Kevin Eubanks 
	and trumpeter Duane Eubanks. His uncles are jazz pianist Ray 
	Bryant and bassist Tommy Bryant.  

1958 - Ten thousand students, led by Jackie Robinson, Harry 
	Belfonte and A. Phillip Randolph, participate in the 
	Youth March for integrated schools in Washington, DC.  

1958 - Daisy Bates, head of the Arkansas chapter of the NAACP, 
	and the nine students who integrated Little Rocks's 
	Central High School are awarded the Spingarn Medal for
	their courage and leadership in the civil rights 
	struggle.

1962 - Uganda is admitted as the 110th member of the United 
	Nations.

1964 - Kevin Michael Richardson is born in The Bronx, New York. He will
	become an actor and voice actor, who will play a multitude of 
	characters in animated series and video games. He will be known 
	for his distinctively deep voice and will play mostly villainous 
	characters since the 1990s. For voicing the Joker in The Batman 
	(2004–08), he will be nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards. 
	He will usually portray villainous characters due to his deep 
	and powerful voice. In 1995, he will obtained his first voice 
	role; Mayor Tilton on the animated TV version of The Mask. His 
	credits will include Captain Gantu in Lilo & Stitch and its 
	franchise, Shnitzel in the Chowder pilot (and will be later 
	replaced by John DiMaggio), Goro in Mortal Kombat, the second 
	voice of Skulker on Danny Phantom, Sarevok in the Baldur's Gate 
	series, Jolee Bindo in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, 
	Crunch Bandicoot in the Crash Bandicoot games, Tartarus from 
	Halo 2, Chairman Drek in Ratchet & Clank, Antauri in Super 
	Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!, Openly Gator from Queer Duck, 
	Doctor Payne and others on The Proud Family, Dark Laser on The 
	Fairly OddParents, Maurice from The Penguins of Madagascar, 
	Slam Tasmanian and Tech E. Coyote on Loonatics Unleashed and 
	the voice of Exile in the 1990s animated series Road Rovers. 
	He will also replace Keith David as the voice of Tombstone on 
	The Spectacular Spider-Man. He will provide a character voice 
	set for Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter and Icewind Dale II. He 
	will be the voice of Heihachi in the PlayStation 2 game Soul 
	Calibur II, though he is listed in the role as Victor Stone. 
	He will also voice Stump Smash and Tree Rex in Skylanders: 
	Swap Force, Skylanders: Trap Team and Skylanders: SuperChargers.
	In 2001, he will voice Barney Rubble in the animated movie The 
	Flintstones: On the Rocks. In 2003, he will voice Trigon in the 
	animated series Teen Titans. In 2004, he will become the first 
	African American to voice the Joker in the Kids WB animated 
	series, The Batman, a role for which he will be twice nominated 
	for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an 
	Animated Program. In 2006, he will appear in the comedy Clerks 
	II in which he plays a cop who notices the words "Porch Monkey 
	4 Life" written on the back of Randal Graves' work jacket. In 
	2008, he will perform the voice of Bishop for Wolverine and the 
	X-Men. Later, he will do the voice of Nick Fury on The Super 
	Hero Squad Show. He will often play characters based on comedian 
	Bill Cosby, such as on Family Guy ("Brian Does Hollywood"), where 
	Stewie is a contestant on the comedian's Kids Say the Darndest 
	Things; as Cosby himself on The Boondocks and playing the role of 
	Numbuh 5's father Mr. Lincoln, who is also a homage of Cosby on 
	Codename: Kids Next Door. His most frequent role on Family Guy 
	will be as Jerome, Lois's ex-boyfriend. He will also voice 
	Cleveland Brown, Jr., Lester Krinklesac and numerous others on 
	The Cleveland Show. He will voice Principal Brian Lewis on 
	American Dad!. His voice roles (in 2011) will include Panthro in 
	the 2011 Thundercats series, Martian Manhunter on Young Justice, 
	and Bulkhead, one of the Autobots in Transformers: Prime.

1968 - The city of Chicago officially recognizes Jean Baptiste
	Pointe du Sable as its first settler.

1971 - Craig Phillip Robinson is born in Chicago, Illinois. He will become 
	an actor, comedian, musician and singer. He will be best known for 
	his roles as Darryl Philbin on The Office (2005–2013) and Doug 
	Judy (the "Pontiac Bandit") on Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–).  He will 
	be a frequent collaborator with Seth Rogen, starring alongside Rogen 
	in the films Knocked Up (2007), Pineapple Express (2008), Zack and 
	Miri Make a Porno (2008), This Is the End (2013) and Sausage Party 
	(2016). On top of Shrek Forever After and Sausage Party, he will
	also provide his voice for the films Escape from Planet Earth (2013), 
	Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) and Henchmen (2018). He will
	also appear in what was then the highest grossing Korean film, D-War 
	(Korean: 디워, released in North America as Dragon Wars: D-War) in 
	2007. Making a departure from his comedy background, he will portray 
	saxophonist Maceo Parker in the James Brown biopic Get On Up (2014). 
	In December 2015, he will appear in several Wal-Mart commercials 
	promoting their credit card while singing and playing the piano at 
	the store. He will receive rave reviews for the A24 drama Morris 
	from America (2016), earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit 
	Award for Best Supporting Male. 

1972 - Persia Jessica White is born in Miami, Florida. She will become an 
	actress, singer and musician. She will perhaps be best known for her 
	role as Lynn Searcy on the sitcom Girlfriends which originally aired 
	from 2000 until 2008. She will also be a member of the industrial 
	rock band XEO3 and a solo singer, who will release her debut album 
	Mecca in 2009. She will appear in various independent films, 
	including Red Letters (opposite Peter Coyote) and the cult horror 
	Blood Dolls. She will star in the made-for-TV movies Operation 
	Sandman (opposite Ron Perlman), and Suddenly, opposite Kirstie Alley. 
	Her television work will include guest starring roles on Angel, NYPD 
	Blue, The Steve Harvey Show, Brooklyn South, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 
		as well as a series regular role on Breaker High with co-star Ryan 
	Gosling and Hit TV Series Girlfriends as Lynn. In 2008, she will 
	appear in The Fall of Night, as the character Dawn. She will also be 
	seen in Chrisette Michele's video, "Be OK". In addition to acting, 
	she will also co-produce the award-winning documentary Earthlings, 
	narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. In July 2011, she will win the award for 
	Best Performance By An Actor in the American Black Film Festival for 
	her work in Dysfunctional Friends. She will also appear as Bonnie's 
	mother on The Vampire Diaries in a semi-recurring role. 

1973 - Abebe Bikila, Ethiopian marathoner who won the Olympic Gold Medal in 
	1960 and 1964, joins the ancestors at the age of 46.

1976 - Clarence "Willie" Norris, the last surviving member of 
	the nine Scottsboro Boys, who were convicted in 1931 
	of the alleged rape of two white women on a freight 
	train, is pardoned by Governor George Wallace. Norris
	had spent 15 years in prison and had been a fugitive 
	fleeing parole in Alabama in 1946. 

1983 - Mary Francis Berry, professor of history and law at 
	Howard University, and two other members of the Civil 
	Rights Commission are fired by President Ronald Reagan.
	Considered a champion of minority concerns on the 
	Commission, Berry will charge the administration with 
	attempting to "shut up" criticism. She will later sue 
	and be reinstated. 

1983 - The United States and six other Caribbean nations 
	invade the island nation of Grenada.

1985 - Ciara Princess Harris is born in Austin, Texas. She will become a 
	singer, songwriter, dancer, and model. After moving to Atlanta, 
	Georgia, she will join the girl group Hearsay. She will later 
	sign a publishing deal, and befriend producer Jazze Pha, who 
	will record demos that will appear on her debut album. With his 
	help, Ciara will sign a record deal with LaFace Records. In 2004, 
	she will release her debut studio album Goodies, which will spawn 
	four singles: "Goodies", "1, 2 Step", "Oh" and "And I". "Goodies" 
	will top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album will be certified 
	triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America 
	(RIAA), and garner four nominations at the 48th Annual Grammy 
	Awards. She will also be featured on Missy Elliott's "Lose Control" 
	and Bow Wow's "Like You", both of which will reach number three on 
	the Billboard Hot 100. In 2006, she will release her second studio 
	album, Ciara: The Evolution, which will spawn the hit singles "Get 
	Up", "Promise", "Like a Boy" and "Can't Leave 'em Alone". The 
	album will reach number one in the U.S. and be certified platinum.
	Her third studio album, Fantasy Ride (2009) will be less successful 
	than her first two albums. However, it will produce the 
	international top-ten single "Love Sex Magic", featuring Justin 
	Timberlake, which will receive a Grammy Award nomination for Best 
	Pop Collaboration with Vocals. The following year, she will release 
	her fourth studio album Basic Instinct, which will include the R&B 
	top-five single "Ride", but will be met with low sales, continuing 
	a downward trend in her commercial performance. She will sign a 
	new record deal with Epic Records in 2011. In 2013, she will 
	release her fifth studio album, Ciara, which will spawn the R&B 
	top-ten single "Body Party". Her sixth album, Jackie (2015), will
	include the singles "I Bet" and "Dance like We're Making Love". In 
	2006, she will make her film debut in All You've Got, and later 
	appear in the films Mama, I Want to Sing! (2012) and That's My Boy 
	(2012). In 2013, she will have a recurring role in the US TV series, 
	The Game. In 2016, she will sign a modeling contract with IMG. That 
	year, she will become a Global Brand Ambassador for the cosmetics 
	giant Revlon. Since making her musical debut in 2004, she will 
	attain eight Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles. She will also 
	receive many awards, including three BET Awards, three MTV Video 
	Music Awards, three MOBO Awards, and one Grammy Award. As of 2015, 
	she will sell over 23 million records worldwide.

1988 - Two units of the Ku Klux Klan and eleven individuals 
	are ordered to pay $1 million to African Americans who
	were attacked during a brotherhood rally in 
	predominately white Forsythe County, Georgia.  

1990 - Evander Holyfield knocks out James "Buster" Douglas in 
	the third round of their twelve-round fight to become
	the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Holyfield's 
	record stood at 25-0, with 21 knockouts. 

1997 - The Million Woman March, organized by grass root sisters,
	led by Sister Phile Chionesu and Sister Asia Coney, 
	takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event 
	is attended by 1.3 million attendees (300,000 to 1 
	million according to Philadelphia officials). The MWM
	had been promoted by word of mouth and avoided 
	traditional media and mainstream groups, such as 
	sororities and many civil rights groups. Sis. Chionesu
	calls the march "a declaration of independence from 
	ignorance, poverty, enslavement, and all the things 
	that have happened to us that has helped to bring about
	the confusion and disharmony that we experience with 
	one another."

2018 - Sahle-Work Zewde is elected as President of Ethiopia and the first 
	woman to hold the office. A career diplomat, she was elected 
	president unanimously by members of the Federal Parliamentary 
	Assembly. Sahle-Work was previously Special Representative of 
	United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to the African 
	Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union 
	at the level of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
	As of 2019, she is Africa's only serving female head of state.
