Julie,
Do you know the story behind that song? The composeers wife was killed
in a tragic accident about a year before. I guess that she was using
sealing wax to try to save a lock of her daughter's hair. The wind from
an open window nearby blew the flame onto her dress and with all those
layers of clothes that they wore during the Victorian era, saving her was
a lost cause. Also, the civil war was heading into its fourth year and
that, plus the loss of his wife, brought about a pretty deep depression.
Anyway, about a year later, it was the Christmas bells that helped to
lift his depression and so he wrote the poem.
