Alan:
The MFJ998 is very easy to set up and use.
The only sighted help I needed was when I first tried connecting it to my
TS590. You have to access a menu and select the Kenwood option so that the
tuner recognizes the rig, and this is not readily accessible. But, once
that is done, it's a "set and forget" kind of thing.
Actually, I seem to recall that Steve (KW3A) somehow did this independently,
so maybe he'll comment on how he accomplished that.
Once everything is set up properly, tuning is a breeze, especially if you
have the appropriate interface cable for your rig. You press the tune
button on the rig, the relays do their thing, and there is a beep to tell
you tuning is complete. If tuning is not successful, you ultimately will
get the appropriate indication for your rig.
As a final note, I'd strongly recommend utilizing the amp bypass function on
the tuner via the appropriate connections to any amplifier you might use.
It just adds another layer of protection against over-driving, and perhaps
damaging your equipment.

If I remember correctly, several of you use the MFJ 998 auto-tuner. Stan
just shipped me one that he no longer needs. I would be interested to hear
anyone's comments about the 998, good or bad. Stan claims that it is very
easy to use, just hit it with 10 or 20 watts and press the tune button. I
imagine that there must be a light or something to indicate that tuning was
successful, with luck, it also emits a beep of some sort.
