When I get the new Pi, I am going to try it with a Braille display.
I think it is a volume problem.
Should have it this week, and I will keep you posted.

any thoughts on why the built in sound chip won't work?
USB isn't a problem, just curious as to why the onboard one won't do the job
since it's supposed to be multi-channel HD etc. Or at least that is what I
am lead to believe...perhaps not.

There is a version of Ubuntu Mate
For the Raspberry Pi.
It is called, "ubuntu_mate_orca.img"
I can put a copy in my Drop Box folder, and send you the link if you want
it.
