A few months ago, I noticed my VFO knob on my Icom 7000 was catching on something as it rotated. It freaked me out but I fiddle with it to see why it was slowing down and almost stopping in one spot. It has four settings, very hard to turn, hard to turn, free wheeling, easy tune, and clicks. The individual clicks allow me to literally click 1 Hz at a time depending upon which of the settings I have the receiver set to. The more I fiddled with the knob, the worse I made it. Since the front panel comes completely off, I wondered if the knob would, too. I pulled and it popped right off. I figured I’d busted the radio for sure. I put the knob back on the shaft and adjusted it by pushing and pulling until it was set the right distance away from the panel. It has never done that again. I think I had bumped the knob once and it pushed it back on one side so it dragged on the knob as it rotated. Yes, you can set it to fixed position, too, but on my radio, that is accomplished by pressing the voice key and holding it down till it beeps. Then the knob does nothing even if you turn it.

Phil.
