Well, some manufacturers are coming out with multidigital mode radios, DMR
and NXDN for example. I almost wonder if maybe this battle between modes
will go on for 10-15 years, they'll calm down all the innovations in it a
little and possibly a multimode radio will come out with say the best 3 or
so of them and that will be that. I don't think the manufacturers like yaesu
which now have 2 of them, one a huge failure and the other not much better
so far, or DStar will be them. It may come down to ones we haven't even
heard of yet but linking the mode to one manufacturer is not going to work
to it's success in the amateur realm. Commercial maybe since motorola pretty
well gets their hooks in communities and that's that but even at that, I'm
seeing more and more communities by me changing to Icom, Kenwood, Tate, and
getting away from the bit M and finding they like the radios a lot better
and I think if any of them look in to Icom's IDAS, if they want to go
digital, there are some nice features that go along with that, not overly
advertised, but great features for public service that no other digital mode
I know of has except possibly DMR which I know little about but I don't
think so.

And what concerns me Jim is which digital protocole will
survive? Yaesu has theirs and of course, Icom has Dstar, and perhaps
that's not all the entries. And our local police are a part of a
Motorola, state-wide P25 system and I struggle to hear what is being
said. These old ears don't hear all that well any more, even with
overpriced hearing aids!
