Hey, Matt

The word is scourged s c o u r g e d. It means whipped and beaten. We're
pretty sure of exactly what happened because of so much historical evidence
of it being done to others. From the best we can gather, they chained him
by His wrists to a low pillar or post to expose his back, stripped Him down,
then whipped him with a "cat-o-nine-tails", a whip made of long, leather
strips with bits of metal in the ends that tore His back to shreds and made
Him bleed profusely. That's why He became so weak later that He stumbled
with the cross, because He'd already lost so much blood between the whipping
and the thorns in His scalp. Many folks died just from the scourging. Then
they threw a purple robe on His back (so imagine that pain on top of the
other) and at the cross they pulled the robe, which had obviously clotted to
His back, off again to leave Him naked on the cross for public humiliation.
And it wasn't like the polite artists show with his underwear on. He was
completely naked in public and in a culture where, for a religious Jew,
that was unthinkable.

Paul
