Well, Ed, I may have just done that to some extent here.

I've decided to go with a combination of Microsoft Security Essentials, and
Malwarebytes at least for now.

I may actually be replacing this 5 year old Windows 7 home PC at some point
within the next year or so anyway, so don't want to put a whole lote more
money into it if I don't have to.

Anyway, the computer continues to be working now, so life is good and back
to normal, at least for the time being.

Thanks to all on the list for the great suggestions.  I have kept notes on
what has been shared, so it will be handy for future reference if needed.
