You can change the scanning range up to 30 miles if I remember correctly on
the Home Patrol.

I looked at that one, but from what I read, zip code only gives you stuff
within just a few miles, and out here in the sticks, things are much further
apart.  I like the 996, but hard to find workable software, although free
scan was all i found really usable and I bought a couple others.  Have fun
with your new scanner.
