It is from the way older tranceivers were designed. If you mix two
frequencies together, such as in a superhet receiver or tranceiver, vfo
mixed with incoming for the i f, you have original freq, actually, both
of them and the sum and difference. If you take a side band signal and
take the difference, the side band is inverted or switched. If you use
the sum as the output, side band stays the same. Hope that makes sense.
I'd have to refresh my memory on specific if frequencies, vfo
frequencies and so forth, but that is why. This was long before the
days of pll recferences and stuff like that.
